Numeracy
Numeracy is a key life skill. We aim for the children to develop the skills necessary to enable them to think logically, and to inspire them so that they are interested, stimulated and excited by the subject. In doing this, it is important to develop their ability to work independently and be challenged to solve problems.
National Numeracy Strategy
At Elmbridge Infant School we follow the approach to teaching
numeracy recommended by the National Numeracy Strategy. In Reception, children
will receive some direct teaching and will explore those ideas through
structured play and practical work. These ideas may be recorded by the children.
In Years 1 and 2 there is an emphasis on mental maths and whole class
interactive teaching. The children will go on to explore the themes discussed by
the whole class in their group work, recording as appropriate.
Mental Maths
We involve the children in daily mental maths sessions, often related to everyday life, to help them develop quick recall and calculation strategies. During whole class and group work, activities that involve hands-on experience and enquiry are used.
