We will endeavour to do our very best for the children in their first years at school and to make this time as happy and productive as possible.

Teaching and Learning

Elmbridge Infant School caters for both Reception (ages 4 to 5)and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2, ages 5 to 7) children . Within these classes we provide a well balanced, exciting curriculum that meets Government standards.

 Reception Classes

The teaching and learning activities for the Reception children are based on the foundation stage curriculum for three to five year old children.

We encourage the children to spend time on practical tasks and at the same time develop their skills and knowledge across a broad curriculum. They have structured play activities to develop both physical and mental skills so they can approach their learning with enthusiasm and perseverance. The teaching of reading, writing and numeracy is fundamental to their education.

There are two beautiful outdoor play areas that the reception children may use as part of the foundation stage curriculum.

To support the children in their early days at school each class has a teaching assistant in addition to the class teacher. Each room is equipped with computers and a listening centre, in addition to a wide range of quality resources.

 Key Stage One

Years 1 and 2 form Key Stage 1 and are the beginning of your child's journey through the National Curriculum. During this phase of education there is a movement towards more independent learning where the children are encouraged to work alone while the teacher is engaged with other groups or individuals. This independent and group work is planned to meet the children's individual needs. Whole class teaching also takes place particularly in the core subjects of literacy, numeracy and science.

Using the National Curriculum as our framework, we provide a broad and balanced, creative curriculum. Planning for the children's learning needs is completed in year group teams. This ensures that all children in a year group will cover the same work.

 Junior School Transfer

In the December your child is in Year 2, you will receive a preference form from the Local Authority asking you to state in order of preference which Junior School you would like your child to attend. You must sign and return this form to accept a place by the end of January. You will receive notification of the school allocated for your child the following April. If you choose Elmbridge Junior School, which is situated across the playing field, it is the aim of both headteachers that the transition be as smooth as possible, and a number of informal visits to Elmbridge Junior School take place each year for Year 2 children. Teachers visit each other's premises' and Year 3 teachers have opportunities to talk with Year 2 children and their class teacher in a familiar environment as well as being able to see how the children work.

Written records of attainment for each child are sent to the receiving school at transfer. The headteachers meet regularly to exchange information.
